Bull Shoals White River State Park - First Day Hike
Community Event

Monday, January 01, 2018

Bull Shoals-White River State Park celebrates the New Year with a “First Day Hike” on January 1st,2018 at 10:00 am. Start your year right with a breath of fresh air!

We will gather at the Big Bluff Trailhead on Powerhouse Road just beneath the dam. We will hike about 1 ½ - 2 hours on the moderately strenuous Big Bluff Trail, and plan to complete the 1.75 mile loop. Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather and bring water. All dogs must be on a lead.  Following the hike we will enjoy a bonfire with a Dutch Oven dessert.  We will also offer the opportunity for you to write your New Year resolutions and also jot down your grumps and throw them in the fire.  What a great way to start 2018!

The first part of this loop trail is a level walk over the remains of the railroad tram constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to bring in steel and lumber from Cotter, AR to construct Bull Shoals Dam. Once the trail crosses the paved road, it goes up the hillside to an area overlooking the White River, Bull Shoals Dam and an Eagles Nest on the White River. The trail then leads you through mature deciduous forests and across streams.Visitors can listen to birds, breathe in the fresh air, discover wildlife tracksand feel the wind and the warmth of the sun or the coldness of the snow. Visitors can expect to be surrounded by the quiet beauty of nature in winter, experience spectacular views and vistas and benefit from the company of a knowledgeable state park guide.

This First Day Hike is part of a National program of State Parks to offer individuals a great way to get outside, exercise, enjoy nature and welcome the New Year with friends and family.

This event is free to the public and there are no age restrictions but due to rugged terrain the trail is not ADA accessible.
